The question that puts trainers most at risk
Sooner or later, a client asks: "what if I take something to speed things up?". How you respond defines your legal protection, your professional ethics, and your client's health. The short answer: the trainer doesn't prescribe, doesn't advise on dosage, and doesn't recommend a cycle — refers to a doctor. Let's understand why and how to approach it.
The legal line: what counts as a crime
Anabolic steroids are controlled substances. Prescribing, advising on use, recommending dosage, or "designing a cycle" without being a licensed physician can constitute the illegal practice of medicine, leading to civil and criminal liability — as well as a serious ethics violation with your professional registration board. There's no such thing as "just a tip between friends": advising on usage puts you personally at risk.
Recommending a cycle isn't doing your client a favor — it's taking responsibility for harming their health and committing malpractice.
The duty to inform (without prescribing)
You can't prescribe usage, but you can — and should — act responsibly:
- Do not encourage: never suggest, normalize, or facilitate access.
- Disclose risks in general terms: that there are serious cardiovascular, hepatic, hormonal, and psychological risks, and that self-medicating is dangerous.
- Refer to a doctor: an endocrinologist is the qualified professional to assess, order tests, and, if needed, manage any therapy.
How to guide the conversation
No judgment, no lectures — just clear boundaries:
"I get wanting to speed things up, but that's a health decision with serious risks, and it's totally outside my expertise. The right person to safely evaluate that is an endocrinologist, with proper testing. What I can do is optimize your training, your recovery, and help you get where you want to go safely."
This protects you, respects the client, and points them in the right direction.
Focus on what's yours
Often the request comes from impatience with results. That's where your work shines: showing real progress (which fights anxiety), optimizing progression, sleep and consistency. Well-tracked results reduce the temptation to cut corners.
