The wrong price costs you more than a lost client
Charging too little fills your schedule with clients who don't value your work and leaves you exhausted for little pay. Charging too much without communicating value scares people off before you even start. Most trainers guess their pricing by looking at competitors — and get it wrong either way. Let's build yours based on numbers, not guesswork.
Step 1: find your real hourly cost
Before you set your price, know what it costs you to exist as a professional. Add up per month: transportation, app/software, marketing, equipment, taxes, and the income you want to take home. Divide by the hours you can actually train (not the theoretical 8 — the real number, after commute time and gaps in your schedule).
If you don't know your hourly cost, any price is a guess. And a low guess is the most common one.
Step 2: stop selling hours, start selling results
"$80 a session" puts you in a price war. "$400/month with training, coaching, and reassessment" sells transformation. Clients don't want an hour of your time — they want results. Monthly package:
- - Increases your predictable revenue (recurring income).
- - Improves retention (monthly commitment > drop-in class).
- - Shifts the focus away from hourly rate and onto the value delivered.
Step 3: build your value ladder
Offer 3 tiers so every client can fit your pricing without you having to lower your rates:
- 1. Online/consulting: training + remote coaching. Lower price, higher scale. See whether it's worth it.
- 2. Hybrid: a few in-person sessions per month + digital coaching. A middle ground.
- 3. Premium in-person: full one-on-one coaching. Higher price, exclusivity.
Step 4: communicate value before price
When a client asks "how much is it?", whoever answers with just a number loses. Show what's included first: assessment, personalized workouts, ongoing adjustments, follow-up, easy billing. A high price with no context scares people off; a high price with clear value converts.
Price increases without the awkwardness
Give advance notice, back it up with the results you've delivered, and apply it first to new clients. If you deliver results, you have every right to charge for it.
