Frequently asked questions

What is the PAR-Q?
The PAR-Q (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire) is a screening questionnaire created in Canada and maintained by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. It has 7 yes-or-no questions that flag who should talk to a doctor before becoming more physically active.
What should I do if I answered yes to a question?
Talk to a doctor before you start or increase physical activity, and tell them which questions you answered yes to. Clearance often comes with guidance, like starting slowly or avoiding certain exercises.
What's the difference between the PAR-Q and the PAR-Q+?
The PAR-Q+ is the updated version, with the same initial questions plus follow-up pages for anyone who answers yes, which cuts down on the number of people sent to a doctor unnecessarily. The official version is at eparmedx.com.
Who is the PAR-Q for?
The original PAR-Q was designed for people ages 15 to 69. If you're over 69 and not used to being physically active, talk to a doctor before starting, even if you answered no to every question.
Do personal trainers need to give clients the PAR-Q?
It's the most widely used health screening before a first workout, and it protects both the client and the trainer. Keep the signed questionnaire with the client's intake form and repeat it whenever their health changes.
